I never knew cooking can be so interesting before I actually jumped into it.
I will never say that it is easy, but if you ever understand the meaning of cooking it will be a delight for you. Let me tell you the story and the backdrop of my first step towards the world of cooking.
In the initial years and of course before my marriage, I never had to cook. My mom was there to run the show. Sometimes out of curiosity I used to step into the kitchen for making some items. I was fetish for these ready made masala easily available in the market and will create something blankly looking at the prescribed recipes. Never thought of improvising or trying the other way with some homemade customized masala. The result sometimes comes out good and sometimes it will be beyond the word "miserable". But I was never criticized and advised to do something better. My parents will eat it without even telling me how bad it was camouflaging with appreciation, and I will feel that I have reached the stature of Sanjeev Kapoor. Poor me !!.
But soon I was introduced to the real world just before my marriage. My husband now and boyfriend then was a serious critic of food and also a great food lover. He comes from a family where everyone has the basic skills of cooking and even more than that. So as soon as I was introduced to his family, my would-be mom-in-law asked me an obvious question - "Do you know how to cook? ", she continued adding how his son is very critical about food and will not have a bite if it doesn't turn well. First time I was scared, scared to death. What should I say?, should I tell her the truth or just lie to her?. Before uttering a word I remembered that my in-laws are strictly vegetarians with a complete ban on onion and garlic. Whatever experience I had in the name of cooking was only with onions and garlic and most importantly non-vegetarian dishes. So I decided to tell the truth that I never had to cook with an assurance that I will try to learn cooking once I start doing it. I didn't know is that satisfied my mom-in-law but I was happy that I told her what I am.
After getting married, I really don't have to think about cooking, as there were many people to take care of that. I will only do some minor kitchen duties. the only thing I used to make is the tea for all and prepare the lunchbox for me and my husband. As I was introduced as a non-cooking person, I will get valuable inputs from all the members of the family which was really sweet. But I had to start cooking once we shifted to a place near our office and started living there. Here I did not have anyone except my husband. Initially he used to cook and I used to see his cooking styles. He is also a non-cooking person but still has some creative ideas and they worked perfectly. But soon I felt I should start cooking as well. I want to be a good wife who can cook and work at the same time. So any how I started with simple recipes. I used to keep on googling for better recipes and sometimes try them. They sometimes turn well and sometimes it just awful.
In between we shifted to Mangalore, settled etc. etc. Here again I started brushing up my cooking skills. Initially it was bad but slowly it started improving. My husband was there with me as a sole center for inspiration. His critical attitude helps me a lot in my journey on cooking. He criticizes, appreciate and suggest improvements. So gradually I started to hold a place where I can say YES I CAN COOK TOO....
The most pleasing incident happened when my father-in-law came for a visit. I was nervous initially. He too had the knowledge that I cant cook and my mom-in-law used to inquire what I have prepared for him. I tried my best and prepared few dishes that has an authentic Bengali taste. I was sooo happy the day he took an extra spoon of rice as I had prepared his favorite Biulir Dal and Aloo Posto. He was giving elaborate description of my cooking to my mom-in-law over phone and I was blushing with joy. this was really an achievement for me.
Though I am still learning and will continue to learn but I can say that I have reached a place where I can prepare anything and it will taste good. I no longer look for those ready-made masala and prefer to prepare it on my own. I give a lot of time in cooking and never hurry. Though I had to work hard in office but once I reach home I regain the energy in the form of cooking. I must mention my hubby's immense support and contribution, without him I may not have reached this position.
I come across so many cooking blog and do take valuable inputs from them. Once I started this blog beside writing on the various aspects of life, I created a section where I can post the recipes I have made a turned out well. I hope it will help the people who love cooking as well as came into this wonderful arena recently.
Keep checking my blog for some exicting recipes and of course other things too.
